Have Fun with It

Why do you sit? To get calm? To relax? To gain insight? To get uptight and self-critical? Are you taking your meditation too seriously? Has going to your cushion become a chore?
Perhaps it’s time to cultivate Shoshin, a Zen Buddhist term that means “Beginner’s Mind.” Begin by seeing things as though you are seeing them for the first time – see the texture, the topology, the details – and see them with wonder. Let go of your absolute beliefs about how things work and allow yourself to add to your existing body of knowledge. Eliminate expectations about how things should work and instead experience situations as they are. Be curious instead of certain, as you open to new possibilities. Ask simple questions. Digest the answers.
Adding beginner’s mind practice to your routine prevents disappointment as you weren’t expecting anything. As a curious beginner, you can stop procrastination and anxiety as you embrace the present and find gratitude in the present moment.

Mindfulness. Practice daily. Have fun by re-viewing and re-framing every activity as a beginner. Be curious.
